21/52: Everything I Never Told You

Kath's Bookshelf / Saturday, September 22nd, 2018

This year I’ve set myself the challenge to read fifty-two books before 2019; a challenge I’m documenting over on my Goodreads account. While I’m by no means confident I’ll get anywhere near fifty-two books before the year’s up, I’m feeling more cocky than I have since early February. I saw this book was only £2 on Amazon (unfortunately it’s back up to £8) and I recently read Little Fires Everywhere; I was instantly interested. Everything I Never Told You by Celeste Ng is the twenty-first book I’ve read this year and here is my twenty-first book review of the year.

Everything I Never Told You gave me Little Fires Everywhere (unsurprising seeing as though Celeste Ng wrote this too!), One of Us is Lying and Whistle in the Dark vibes. It’s about Lydia, the favourite child of three. Her parents, Marilyn and James Lee see the best parts of themselves in Lydia and they want to ensure she is set up for the best life possible. She will live the dreams that Marilyn never did. So when Lydia’s body is found in the local lake, everything changes. Everything I Never Told You follows Lydia’s family’s breakdown following her death.

Celeste Ng has written yet another powerful story. The utterly “human” nature of this book is so poignant and so heartbreaking. While, as a reader, we struggle with a lot of the characters’ actions, thoughts and comments, we’re committed to the family for Lydia. We watch characters make mistakes in all shapes and sizes; we ache to tell these characters what’s truly important. Because Celeste Ng has a wonderful way of making it incredibly obvious without it necessarily being outlined.

My rating is a 0.5 lower than I expected it to be all the way throughout the novel. I think it was the ending that frustrated me. It wasn’t because I saw it coming but because I feel I’ve been told this ending quite a few times already (which isn’t Celeste Ng’s fault!). Unfairly, maybe my rating would be a little higher if I’d read it a year from now. Despite feeling a little unfulfilled with the ending, I understood it.

Everything I Never Told You is a quick and solid read. I was hooked from the very first page and my interest never wavered. Celeste Ng is a really unique story-teller and I think I’ll be reading her fiction for as long as she’s writing it! Everything I Never Told You is a really gripping read and I most definitely recommend it- especially if you need a quick read to boost your Goodreads numbers!

I rate Everything I Never Told You by Celeste Ng as 3.5/5!
